Artist Meng Yan Shanghai
Opening Party on Tuesday, 19 Aug 2008
Time : 6.30 pm.

In the beginning . . .

Meng Yan’s love of art began when he was very little. He would paint portraits of himself by looking at the mirror. He soon found himself painting portraits of people around him, including some of his neighbors.

Because he knew in his heart he was destined to be a painter, Meng Yan applied to and was accepted into China Central Art College, Beijing. During his studies, he was required to create landscapes, still lives, and every type of painting possible; but his true love remained in portraits.

Upon graduation from China Central Arts College, Meng Yan became an art teacher until the early 90’s when the art scene in China began to change. In 1993, the first China Art Exposition was established with an aim to commercialize Chinese art to the world. At one point, Meng Yan produced nearly 10,000 paintings of commercially viable landscapes, floral arrangements, and animal scenes.

The turning point . . .

In 2003, the turning point of his career occurred when a chain of unfortunate events took place at the same time – the SARS epidemic in China and the sudden deaths of his father and his best friend. These tragic events forced him to question his existence and search his soul for the true meaning of life. What resulted was a new level of personal understanding, especially for the true meaning of art in his life.

The point of no return . . .

After spending 2 years (from 2004-2006) researching his own ‘desires’ and his understanding of the human condition, Meng Yan finally found the ‘true love’ that he had been missing. From that moment on, he vowed to change his outlook on life and to concentrate on the artistic content of his work. His new aim in life was to create, create and create!

The true concepts behind ‘Desires’

To create unexpected visual effects and reveal ‘Desires’ in his own style, Meng Yan used Chinese linen instead of regular canvas and developed unique painting techniques which critiques have called original and truly remarkable. ‘Desires’ consists of more than 40 oil paintings that reflect the artist’s true self and illustrate the ‘desires’ of human beings.
Meng Yan’s past collections have been exhibited at major galleries in Shanghai and many major cities in China. ‘Desires’, however, will be his first overseas exhibition. Thailand is the first stop before the exhibition travels to France, Italy and the United States. Speaking of Meng Yan, Khun Ticha Chotchung, Managing Director of Gossip Gallery stated: ‘we are honored and privileged that the artist picked Thailand to be the first venue to exhibit ‘Desires’ outside of China. We are especially honored that Gossip Gallery is hosting this incredible collection.’
