我很小的时候就迷恋上了肖像画，对着镜子画自画像，也画身边的亲人，连邻居大妈大爷都争着画肖像。考上美术专科学校后，每天晚上都坚持画一幅肖像画。毕业后当上一名美术教师，创作了很多肖像画，同时也画了大量的风景，静物，花卉画，但骨子里还是对肖像画情有独衷。九十年代中国的艺术市场的春天悄悄升起。我参加了刚起步的中国艺术博览会，通过三次参展我摸索出一些路子，也是为了养家糊口，发家制富画了近万张花卉风景静物。大都是写生创作的，其间运用了各种形式的表现手法，写实的，写意的，印象的，表现的，抽象的都画的一丝不苟。但我无论怎么突破都跳不出前辈的影子，内心的痛几乎让我窒息。2003年的非典，父亲的去世，美国朋友的英年早逝都深深刺痛了我，让我重新对世界，人生，生命，艺术有了新的认识。2004年我对自己说，以前的孟岩已死，艺术的孟岩已生，通过对自己对人性的研究，我找到自己的最爱，找到自己的追求，努力的方向做一个纯粹的艺术家，一切作品都有感而发。

I fell in love with portrait since I was very little. I would paint my own portrait by looking into the mirror, and I would also start painting portraits of those around me, including some of my neighbors.

When I got accepted into China Central Art College, I insisted on drawing one portrait a night. After graduation, I became an Art teacher. During this period, I drew lots of portraits and at the same time, I also painted lots of scenery, still lives, flora etc., but deep inside, I know my true love is still portraits.

In the early 90s, the art scenes in China began to pick up. In 1993, we saw the first China Art Exposition. I exhibited my works in 3 of the years in which I found the route into the commercial world of Chinese Art. I did close to 10,000 paintings that were more commercially viable then, like sceneries and flora etc. Most of the techniques used then were images drawn from real life, from imagination, impression, revealing to abstract, all of these were meticulously drawn. One of the main purposes then was to earn a living by drawing all these commercial pieces. However, no matter how much I tried, I couldn’t come up with something original. All my art pieces seem to be comparable to that of earlier artists. This is like a suppression that is almost killing me inside.

In 2003, SARS was rampant in China. At the same time, my dad passed away and one of my best friends in the US passed away as well. All these events and sadness was overwhelming then, and it forced me to revisit my inner cravings and what I really aspired to be. I began to get a deeper insight into the meaning of living in this world, and what living is all about. All these soul searching brought me to a different level of understanding to the meaning of Art. In 2004, I told myself, the old Meng Yan is dead, and the artistic Meng Yan is reborn. After much research in understanding myself and other human beings (2004 – 2006), I found the “true love” that I have always been looking for. Now, I totally pursue art and devote myself to art. In my work, you will see that there is no holding back and it will totally reveal the desires and feelings of human beings. My only aim now is to create, create and create.

EDUCATION

Solo Exhibition

- 1986 got admitted to Xu Zhou Normal College, Jiang Su

- 1996, painting called <ping hua> (Vase) was auctioned by Pacific International Auction Co. Ltd in China

- 1997, his oil painting <gan hua guo> (Dried flower fruit), was chosen for the 1997 Still life oil painting exhibition in China

- 1998 did graduated studies in China Central Art College, Beijing. His work <Ying – Eagle> was chosen to be exhibited in The Jiangsu Art Exhibition

- 1999 took part in England’s David Smith Oil Painting Techniques conference

- 2000, had <Meng Yan’s First Oil Painting Exhibition> in Taiwan Gallery

- In 2002, Meng Yan moved to Shanghai, after which he went to Australia to get some inspiration on his works. During the year, he was one of the artists that drew the 2 massive paintings on the walls of Shanghai Cultural Centre

- 2003-2007 took part consecutively in the China Art Exposition and in 2003, also took part in the <Shanghai Youth Artists Exhibition> in Hamburg, Germany

- 2004, <Meng Yan, A Song Oil painting Exhibition>, in Shanghai Heng shan road Embassy Square

- 2005 -2007, he stopped all previous works to procrastinate on what he really wants and his style of painting

2007: Beginning of Meng Yan’s New Era: whereby he started to draw Portraits portraying feelings etc.

- 2007, <Meng Yan, A Song New Oil painting Exhibition>, at Hui Sheng Art Centre in Shanghai

- November 2007, also took part in the Shanghai Art Festival

- March 2008, < Meng Yan’s Dream> at Fu Xin Gallery in Shanghai

- August 2008, <Desires>, Meng Yan’s solo exhibition at Gossip Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand.
